Friars Goose Chemical Works Disaster (United Alkali) A serious accident occurred when coke in the condenser caught fire. When the foreman and two other men failed to extinguish it, two of the men left to find a hosepipe. The condenser then fell on the remaining man who was buried by debris, and six of his would-be rescuers were also killed by the fall of the remaining condensers.
